Lead Software Engineer / Data Modeler

Location: Naperville, IL

Duration: 3 months+

 

Data Warehouse Data Modeler to serve on the Business Intelligence team, supporting Erwin Logical DW models along with Oracle, and/or PostgreSQL descendent columnar database target systems. This position will provide delivery capability to the BI team for database logical and physical design on a variety of projects. Excellent communication and organizational skills are a must, along with the ability to rapidly hit the ground running and positively contribute to success in a dynamic work environment.

 

Describe day-to-day activities:

1. Manages and develop logical/physical data models and ERWIN metadata documentation.

2. Assist with relevant capacity planning activities of data warehousing in terabytes volumes.

3. Analyze, size, and profile content of source systems and files to develop target data models that accurately and efficiently structure the required business information.

4. Provide an initial field-level source to target mapping that reflects the end-design of the modeled data tables to ETL developers.

5. Works closely with application project, data, systems and BI team leads on all issues related to logical and physical data models.

6. Will be required to work on moderately to very complex tasks.

7. Follow SDLC processes and master the rules governing business applications.

Requirements

# Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, related engineering discipline or equivalent experience required

# 5+ years of IT experience, including database logical and physical design and implementation

# Project management/SDLC process familiarity

# High level of design experience with very large database warehousing environment, including design of star schemas, dynamic and materialized views, partitioning strategies, bitmapped indexes, and so forth. Experience with columnar databases a plus.

# Experience with a variety of system sources, including relational database, mainframe and ASCII flat files, and large packaged applications.

# Must be a high energy team player with a positive working attitude and possess excellent documentation skills

# Must be able to manage multiple assignments simultaneously

# Excellent verbal and written communications skills required.

# Understanding of the retail industry is preferred. Specific experience data modeling for merchandising/marketing functional areas a definite plus

 

Technical Skills

Required skills 5+ years experience:

# Modeling for Oracle version 10G targets in Data Warehousing Logical/physical and Decision Support Systems.

# Experience with columnar databases (descendent from PostgreSQL) a plus. Oracle DBA knowledge and experience also a plus.

# Demonstrated SQL experience to effectively analyze and profile data in relational database sources during the modeling process.

# Experience in design issues relevant to terabyte-level database deployment and tool-based ETL processes. Specific experience in DataStage a plus.

# Extensive Erwin usage. Logical/Physical modeling, DDL generation, capacity planning (volumetric), and reverse engineering

# Demonstrated knowledge and competence in Relational and Dimensional modeling techniques including star-schema, snowflake, conformed dimensions.

# Physical translation of logical models to physical database structures including partitioned tables, BTree and Bitmappedindexes. Awareness and understanding of performance implications associated with physical design decisions in Data Warehouse environments.
