Microsoft Systems Architect
FUNCTION:
This person will augment the Windows Server team, specifically addressing operational issues associated with Active Directory and Exchange Server. This person will work closely with his team lead, peers, and manager to support enterprise systems that provide critical services for the teaching and research missions of the university and server our students, faculty, and staff. As an integral member of a team of cross-functional analysts, this person insures system availability and usability for the university’s enterprise systems, meeting business needs of the entire campus.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
This person will be responsible for the maintenance and administration of administrative and academic systems in a manner consistent with established policy and procedures with attention to current industry best practices. This person will act on operational issues, providing first level of escalation support for all user-identified issues associated with our Active Directory and Exchange Server systems. He will support, maintain, use and act on monitoring systems. He will troubleshoot operating system, application, hardware, storage and networking issues, engaging other work centers and vendors as needed. He will provide regular software maintenance and patching as well as be involved in routine upgrades of both software and hardware for these systems. He will support storage systems directly associated with his servers and applications. He will be responsible to provide backup and restore services for his systems to include performing regular test restores of his systems. This person will contribute to on-going efforts to provide documentation on both individual server systems as well as the services as a whole. While this position is assigned primarily to support our authentication and email infrastructure, he will support other systems, including SharePoint, SQL, IIS and others as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor’s degree (alternatively four years of experience) and at least two years experience maintaining and administering Microsoft Windows Server-based solutions. Candidate must have experience with Active Directory, Exchange Server, and PowerShell for server administration as well as network, DNS, and firewall configuration and troubleshooting.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are preferred qualifications: Microsoft Certified Systems Engineering or Microsoft Certified IT Professional, familiarity with Microsoft Cluster Services, enterprise Exchange Server implementations, and VMware virtualization. Experience with SharePoint, SQL server, IIS, Hyper-V, appV, and RDS.
SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:
Must be able to work with a team of peers, share responsibility, learn quickly, as well as teach others team members to provide for task coverage.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Will receive daily operational supervision directly from the Windows Server team lead, specifically the AD and Exchange team lead. Will report to the Infrastructure Systems Manager.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (show percentage):
· Monitor, perform scheduled hardware and software maintenance and patching (25%)
· Administer Microsoft Exchange and AD servers (25%)
o Account, mailbox and other administrative functions
· Troubleshoot errors or system problems once identified by the appropriate support personnel (25%)
o Interact with internal and external software and hardware providers in the support, maintenance and troubleshooting of system issues
· Provide documentation on new and existing systems in a manner consistent with existing practice (10%)
· Provide disaster recovery, disaster avoidance, and business continuity policy (5%)
· Maintain a thorough knowledge of current technology trends and advancements through self-learning, conferences and in-class training (10%)
