2.0       Statement of Work

 

·         Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Upgrade leadership, planning, and implementation.

·         Altiris Help Desk 6.0 active management and performance tuning.

·         Establish new and review existing best practices related to Microsoft SQL Server database administration.

 

3.0  Project Scope

 

The ISD Database unit has been supporting Microsoft SQL Server RDBMS based applications for the last several years.  Best practices are established, but active technical leadership has been impacted due to the focus provided to STARS and Tax Discovery initiatives.  Applications are supported on 25 production servers and 10 development/test servers. 

 

The Altiris HelpDesk 6.0 application has been in production for the last 2 years and recently has hit some performance limitations due to data growth and data quality issues.  A performance improvement team is actively working to understand and establish a proactive management framework.

 

 

4.1         The objective of this task is to provide active performance management, monitoring, and tuning for a 350 GB Altiris HelpDesk 6.0 SP3 database hosted on a Wintel server using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP2 RDBMS.

 

·         Tasks to be performed:

·         Review current implementation for Altiris HelpDesk 6.0.

·         Review Altiris best practices.

·         Review current Database maintenance plan for the Altiris application.

·         Recommend Altiris specific and general best practices for the Altiris application.

·         Lead junior DBA staff in implementing the recommended changes.

·         Establish active monitoring and performance management for the Altiris application.

·         Altiris HelpDesk 7.0 conversion planning.

 

 

·         Work Products: MS SQL Server 2005 SP3, RedGate Tools

 

·         Deliverables:  

·         Optimized database performance for the Altiris HelpDesk solution. 

·         Participate in a performance improvement team effort to mature our processes around supporting the Altiris HelpDesk solution.

·         Provide direction to junior DBA staff who will be implementing the DBA tasks providing skill development and technical maturation.

·         Prepare staff for the HelpDesk 7.0 upgrade.

 

·         Completion Criteria:   

·         Performance problem issue resolved and successful system performance over a one month cycle of activity.  

·         Controlled growth of the Altiris application avoiding future performance issues.

·         Junior DBA staff provided the documentation and knowledge transfer resulting in the capacity to provide on-going support for the Altiris application database.

 

4.2         The objective of this task is to lead the ISD Database Unit in the planning, preparation, and execution of upgrading MS SQL Server 2005 SP2 to MS SQL Server 2008.

 

·        Tasks to be performed:

·        Review Server 2008 Phase 2 project plan and approach.

·        Research and recommend MS SQL Server 2008 upgrade candidate (SP1 or SP2).

·        Work with junior DBA staff to define and document upgrade steps.

·        Work with project manager to define all upgrade related tasks in the project plan.

·        Work with junior DBA staff to implement and validate upgrades.

 

·         Work Products: MS SQL Server 2008 SP1, RedGate Tools

 

·         Deliverables:  

·         Development and production servers upgraded to MS SQL Server 2008 as available. 

 

·         Completion Criteria:   

·         Server 2008 Project Phase 2 successfully completed.

 

4.3         The objective of this task is to lead the ISD Database Unit in reviewing existing best practices as well as creating new best practices.  Providing increased automation of database management tasks is a driving business requirement.

 

·        Tasks to be performed:

·        Review current ISD Database Unit SQL Server best practices.

·        Review current Microsoft SQL Server best practices.

·        Identify new best practices and potential areas of improvement.

·        Prioritize new or changed best practices with senior DBA resources.

·        Implement new or changed best practices with the DBA team.

·        Propose new task automations and assist staff in the implementations.

 

·         Work Products: MS SQL Server 2005 SP1, 2008 SP1, RedGate Tools

 

·         Deliverables:  

·         Updated current set of MS SQL Server best practices. 

 

·         Completion Criteria:   

·         Defined library of MS SQL Server best practices.

 

 

          Deliverable Materials

 

The following materials will be delivered to the client under this Statement of Work and include only those materials created during this engagement. 

 

·         Day to day operations and tuning of MS SQL Server databases.

·         Weekly status reports

·         Optimized database performance for the Altiris HelpDesk solution. 

·         Participate in a technical team effort to mature our processes around supporting the Altiris HelpDesk solution.

·         Prepare staff for the HelpDesk 7.0 upgrade.

·         Development and production servers upgraded to MS SQL Server 2008 as available.

·         Provide direction to junior DBA staff who will be implementing the DBA tasks providing skill development and technical maturation.

·         Knowledge, skills, and abilities transfer to junior DBA staff through out the engagement.

·         Updated current set of MS SQL Server best practices.
